Growing up in the mid-western hills of Nepal, Birendra was aware of poor infrastructure and the unequal distribution of natural resources, including water. He soon realised that growth in the hydro sector had the potential to be key in Nepal’s future sustainable development. Birendra’s unwavering passion for natural resources and economic development was the precursor to his studies in Economics.

Birendra holds a BA (Hons) degree in Economics from Banaras Hindu University and was a 2015 Environmental Leadership Fellow at the University of California – Berkeley. He has had the opportunity to work with Clean Energy Development Bank Ltd (a joint-venture with FMO, The Netherlands) where he collaborated in the development of sustainable financing solutions for many small hydro and microhydro projects. Birendra is firmly convinced that socio-environmental benefits and economic viability can indeed co-exist together.
